“But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods…” – Daniel 3:18

Devotional

Daniel 3:18 gives us one of the strongest pictures of mature faith in the Bible. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego believed God was able to deliver them. But then they said, “But if not.” In other words, even if God does not do this the way we hope, we still will not bow.

This is not weak faith. This is deep faith.

Even if faith does not mean we stop believing God for miracles. It means our trust in God is not dependent on Him following our exact script. It means we believe He is able, and we also trust that He is sovereign, wise, and good.

This can be hard because many of us have prayed prayers that did not get answered the way we wanted. We have believed for things that took longer than expected. We have faced outcomes that hurt. And if we are not careful, disappointment can make us either stop praying boldly or only trust God when we feel sure He will do what we want.

But even if faith says, “God, I trust You beyond the outcome.” It says, “I will obey even when I do not understand.” It says, “I will not bow to bitterness, fear, compromise, or unbelief.” It says, “My worship is not for sale.”

Sister, God can handle your honest disappointment. He can handle your tears. He can handle your questions. But do not let pain convince you that God is no longer worthy of trust.

Even if the answer takes time, He is faithful. Even if the process hurts, He is present. Even if the story looks different than you imagined, He is still God.

Today, ask the Lord for a faith that believes boldly and trusts deeply. A faith that can pray, “God, You are able,” and also say, “No matter what, I will not bow.”

Prayer

Father, give me even if faith. Help me believe You are able and trust You even when I do not understand the outcome. Keep my heart from bitterness and help me remain faithful in the fire. In Jesus’ name, amen.
