Studying the Bible isn’t just about reading words on a page—it’s about meeting with God, hearing His voice, and allowing His truth to transform your life. In our recent podcast episode, we shared some practical tools to help you dive deeper into Scripture and truly engage with God’s Word. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to go deeper, here’s a simple and effective way to study the Bible using the 5 Ps and the S.O.A.P. method.
The 5 Ps of Bible Study
These five steps will help guide your heart and mind as you study:
- Position Yourself to Hear from God
Start by preparing your heart. Remove distractions, quiet your environment, and pray—asking God to speak to you through His Word. - Pour Over the Passage and Paraphrase
Read the passage slowly and carefully, more than once if needed. Then, paraphrase it in your own words to help internalize the meaning. - Pull Out the Spiritual Principles
Look for timeless truths and lessons. What does this passage reveal about God, people, faith, obedience, or the Christian life? - Pose the Question
Ask yourself, “How does this apply to me?” Invite the Holy Spirit to show you specific areas in your life where this Word speaks. - Plan Obedience
Don’t just be a hearer—be a doer. Make a practical plan to live out what you’ve learned. Write it down, set a reminder, take action.
The S.O.A.P. Method
Pairing the 5 Ps with the S.O.A.P. method gives your study both depth and structure:
- S – Scripture
Choose a key verse or passage and write it out. - O – Observation
Note what stands out. Who is speaking? What’s happening? Are there commands, promises, or repeated themes? - A – Application
Reflect on how this scripture applies to your current season. What is God asking you to change, believe, or do? - P – Prayer
Pray the Word back to God. Ask Him to help you obey and walk in truth. Surrender any fears or doubts and invite His strength.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a seminary degree to study the Bible—just a willing heart, a desire to grow, and a few simple tools like these. As you consistently show up and spend time in God’s Word, you’ll find that He meets you there, speaks clearly, and draws you closer to Him.
