Worship Through Tears

Key Scripture: Psalm 56:8 (NIV)

Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll – are they not in your record?

Devotional

Grief is a strange thing.

Just when you think you’re doing better, something unexpected can bring the emotions rushing back. A memory appears out of nowhere. A familiar song starts playing. A photo pops up on your phone. Suddenly you’re right back in a moment you thought you had moved past.

Loss has a way of lingering in places we don’t always anticipate.

Sometimes the loss involves someone we love. Other times it’s a dream that never came to pass, a relationship that ended, or a season of life we wish could have lasted a little longer. Whatever form it takes, grief reminds us that our hearts were never designed to carry pain alone.

One of the things I appreciate most about Scripture is how honest it is about sorrow. The Bible doesn’t pretend that faithful people are always strong. It doesn’t suggest that mature believers never struggle. In fact, many of the people God used most powerfully walked through deep seasons of grief and heartbreak.

David certainly did.

When you read the Psalms, you encounter a man who wasn’t afraid to bring his tears before God. He didn’t clean up his emotions before praying. He didn’t wait until he felt stronger. He simply came honestly.

I think many of us need permission to do the same.

Sometimes we mistakenly believe that worship should always feel triumphant. We assume that if we’re still hurting, we’re somehow doing it wrong. But worship isn’t about pretending everything is okay. Worship is about bringing our whole selves into God’s presence, including the parts that are hurting.

There have been moments in my life when worship sounded less like singing and more like crying out to God. Not because my faith was weak, but because my heart needed Him desperately.

The beautiful thing is that God never turns away from those moments.

Psalm 56 paints a picture of a God who notices every tear. Not just the ones others see. Every single one. The tears shed in private. The tears cried in prayer. The tears that never make it into words.

He sees them all.

And if He cares enough to notice every tear, then surely He cares about the pain behind them.
