Walking in Step with God

Key Scripture: John 14:15 (NIV)

If you love me, keep my commands.

Devotional

When most people think about worship, they think about songs.

And that’s understandable. Music has always been a beautiful expression of worship throughout Scripture. Some of the most powerful moments in the Bible involved people lifting their voices in praise to God.

But the longer I walk with the Lord, the more I realize that worship extends far beyond what happens with our lips.

In fact, some of the deepest acts of worship never involve a song at all.

They happen in the quiet moments when we choose obedience.

I think obedience is often underrated because it rarely feels dramatic. Most of the time it happens in ordinary decisions that nobody else sees. It’s choosing forgiveness when holding a grudge would feel easier. It’s telling the truth when dishonesty would be more convenient. It’s trusting God’s instructions even when we don’t fully understand them.

Those moments may not feel particularly spiritual, but they reveal something important about our hearts.

They reveal whether we truly trust God.

Jesus connected love and obedience in a way that challenges all of us. He didn’t say that loving Him would simply produce emotional feelings. He taught that genuine love would be reflected in the way we live.

That doesn’t mean we obey perfectly. None of us do.

What it does mean is that our desire to honor God grows as our relationship with Him deepens.

I’ve found that obedience becomes much easier when I stop viewing God’s commands as restrictions and start seeing them as expressions of His love. God doesn’t instruct us because He wants to make life difficult. He guides us because He sees what we cannot see and wants what is best for us.

Every act of obedience becomes an opportunity to say, “Lord, I trust You.”

And trust is one of the purest forms of worship.

When we obey God in the small things, we are declaring that His wisdom is greater than our own. We are acknowledging that His ways are better than ours, even when we don’t fully understand them.

That’s worship.

Not just in song, but in life.

Heart Check

Is there an area of your life where God has been prompting you to obey Him, but you’ve been hesitant to respond?

Practice Today

  • Ask God if there is an area where He is calling you to greater obedience.
  • Take one practical step of obedience today.
  • Thank Him for loving you enough to guide your life.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your wisdom and Your guidance. Help me trust You enough to obey, even when I don’t fully understand. May my life reflect a heart that loves You and desires to honor You in every area. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
