The more Scripture you know, the easier it becomes to recognize when something does not sound like God. The Holy Spirit inspired the Word, so He will never lead you contrary to it. Scripture becomes a vocabulary of truth stored in your heart that the Spirit can bring to mind exactly when you need it.
This is why Bible reading is not separate from hearing God. It is foundational to it. We can become fascinated with receiving a personal word while neglecting the Word God has already given us. Yet the Spirit often guides by illuminating a familiar verse in a fresh situation.
Perhaps you are tempted to retaliate, and the Spirit reminds you to bless those who mistreat you. Perhaps fear rises, and you remember that God has not given you a spirit of fear. Perhaps you are exhausted, and Jesus’ invitation to come and rest becomes personal. That is the Spirit using truth to lead.
If you want to hear God more clearly, do not only ask for a voice. Fill your heart with His Word. The Shepherd’s voice becomes easier to recognize when you know what He has already said.
A woman saturated in Scripture becomes harder to deceive. Fill your heart with the Word and let the Holy Spirit bring truth to your remembrance when you need it.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, give me a hunger for Scripture. Write Your truth on my heart and bring it to mind when I need direction. Let Your Word become a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. Amen.
