Key Scripture
Acts 1:8
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.
Devotional
Spiritual power has a purpose. Jesus said the disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, and that power would enable them to be His witnesses. The Spirit’s power is not given so we can appear impressive. It equips ordinary believers to carry out extraordinary obedience.
Sometimes we want power without mission. We want to feel strong, victorious, and spiritually energized, but Acts keeps pointing us outward. Empowerment makes us useful. The Spirit strengthens us to speak truth, serve sacrificially, endure opposition, forgive, pray boldly, and represent Jesus in places where our natural ability is insufficient.
That also protects us from making spiritual gifts about status. A gift is not a trophy proving that we are more spiritual. It is a tool for serving the body and advancing the mission of Jesus. If people leave impressed with us but not drawn toward Christ, we have missed the point.
Ask the Holy Spirit to make you powerful in the ways that matter to God: powerful enough to love difficult people, speak when you would rather remain silent, stay faithful when applause disappears, and obey when the cost is real.
The Spirit’s power is never about making us look impressive. It is about making us useful for the purposes of Jesus.
Heart Check
When you ask God for more power, what do you want that power for?
Practice Today
- Pray specifically for Spirit-empowered courage in one area of obedience.
- Look for one way to serve where no recognition is guaranteed.
- Share one simple truth about Jesus with someone when an appropriate opportunity opens.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, empower me for Your purposes. Let Your strength in me point people toward Jesus, not toward me. Give me courage to witness, serve, endure, and obey. Amen.
