Fasting With Purpose

Key Scripture: Matthew 6:17–18 (NIV)

But when you fast… your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Devotional

Fasting is not about proving spirituality — it is about creating space.

When believers fast, they intentionally deny the flesh to focus more deeply on God. Fasting increases spiritual awareness, strengthens discipline, and reminds us of our dependence on Him.

The enemy thrives when believers become spiritually distracted, spiritually dull, or consumed by constant noise and comfort.

Fasting interrupts that pattern.

It quiets distractions and re-centers attention on God’s presence, wisdom, and direction.

Biblical fasting is not about earning God’s favor. It is about drawing closer to Him with intentional humility and focus.

Even small acts of fasting can deepen sensitivity to God when approached sincerely.

Today, ask God if there is something you need to temporarily set aside so your spirit can become more attentive to Him.

Heart Check

What distraction or comfort has been taking too much space in your heart lately?

Practice Today

  • Fast from one distraction for part of the day.
  • Spend the time you would normally use on that activity praying instead.
  • Ask God for fresh spiritual sensitivity and focus.

Prayer

Father, teach me to seek You with greater intentionality. Help me become less distracted and more spiritually attentive. Show me anything that has been competing for too much space in my heart or attention. As I draw closer to You, strengthen my discipline, sharpen my discernment, and deepen my hunger for Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
