Because You Say So

Scripture

“Nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.” – Luke 5:5

Devotional

Peter had been fishing all night and caught nothing. He was tired. He was experienced. He knew the water. From a natural perspective, it probably did not make sense to try again. But when Jesus told him to let down the nets, Peter responded, “Nevertheless at thy word.”

In everyday language, he was saying, “Because You say so, Lord.”

That is a powerful picture of surrendered faith. It is not obedience because the conditions look perfect. It is not obedience because we feel confident. It is not obedience because we understand exactly how it will work. It is obedience because Jesus has spoken.

How many times has God asked us to do something that did not make sense to our tired hearts? Pray again. Forgive again. Serve again. Hope again. Speak life again. Take the next step again. Let go again. Try again.

Sometimes our response is, “Lord, I already tried.” “Lord, I am tired.” “Lord, this does not make sense.” “Lord, what if nothing changes?” And God is not offended by our honesty. But He invites us into a deeper trust.

Peter’s miracle came on the other side of obedience. He let down the net at the word of Jesus, and what had been empty became full.

Sister, this is not a formula that says every act of obedience will instantly produce the exact result we want. But it is a reminder that obedience creates room for God to work. Sometimes the breakthrough is in the net, but the net has to be lowered.

Today, what is your “because You say so”? What instruction have you been delaying because you are tired, disappointed, afraid, or unsure?

Faith does not always feel brave. Sometimes faith sounds like a tired woman whispering, “Lord, I do not fully understand, but because You say so, I will obey.”

Prayer

Father, give me a heart that says yes to Your Word. Even when I am tired or unsure, help me obey because You have spoken. Strengthen me to lower the net again in faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
