Key Scripture
Galatians 5:22–23
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Devotional
When people think about the Holy Spirit, they often think first about gifts, power, prophecy, or supernatural moments. Those things matter, but Scripture also gives us another evidence of the Spirit’s work: fruit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are not personality traits reserved for naturally calm or pleasant people. They are the result of the Spirit forming the character of Jesus in us.
It is possible to desire spiritual power while resisting spiritual formation. We may want God to use us publicly while refusing to let Him correct us privately. But the Holy Spirit cares deeply about who we are becoming. A powerful gift without mature character can wound people. Fruit gives our gifts a safe place to operate.
Fruit also grows slowly. You may notice that you are more patient than you used to be, quicker to repent, less controlled by anger, or better able to remain peaceful under pressure. Those changes may not feel dramatic, but they are evidence of grace. Do not despise gradual transformation.
Today, instead of asking only, “Holy Spirit, what do You want me to do?” ask, “Holy Spirit, who are You forming me to become?” The territory He most desires to transform first may be the territory of your own heart.
Do not measure spiritual growth only by dramatic moments. Look for the quiet evidence of Christ becoming more visible in your reactions, relationships, and choices.
Heart Check
Which fruit of the Spirit do you most need the Holy Spirit to grow in you right now?
Practice Today
- Choose one fruit of the Spirit to intentionally practice today.
- Notice the situation where that fruit is hardest for you to display.
- At the end of the day, reflect on where you sensed the Spirit helping you respond differently.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, form the character of Jesus in me. Grow Your fruit in the places where I am impatient, reactive, fearful, or self-centered. I do not only want to be gifted; I want to be transformed. In Jesus’ name, amen.
