Testing Every Spirit

Key Scripture: 1 John 4:1 (NIV)

Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.

Devotional

Spiritual language alone is not proof of spiritual truth. John warns believers to test the spirits because not every influence, teaching, or message comes from God. Discernment is not suspicion for its own sake; it is obedience.

Testing begins with the Word. We compare what we hear with what God has revealed in Scripture. We ask whether it exalts Jesus, agrees with truth, and produces fruit consistent with God’s character.

This kind of discernment protects our hearts and keeps us from confusion. It helps us stay tender toward God without becoming gullible toward error.

Today, refuse to accept things untested. Bring everything back to the standard of God’s Word.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, give me discernment to test what I hear and receive. Guard me from error, and help me remain anchored in biblical truth. Let me be both spiritually open and scripturally grounded. Amen.
