Key Scripture: Psalm 27:8 (NIV)
My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Devotional
Most of us first learn to seek God because we need something.
Maybe we’re facing a difficult situation and need wisdom. Maybe we’re praying for healing, direction, provision, or a breakthrough in a relationship. Difficult seasons have a way of driving us to our knees, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with bringing our needs before God. In fact, He invites us to do exactly that.
But as our relationship with Him grows, something beautiful begins to happen. We start realizing that what we truly need most isn’t simply an answer to our prayers. It’s His presence.
David understood this better than most people in Scripture. When you read the Psalms, you see a man who experienced incredible victories, devastating failures, heartbreaking losses, and miraculous deliverances. Yet through every season, one desire remained consistent: he wanted God.
Certainly David asked God for help. He prayed for protection, guidance, and deliverance many times. But beneath all those prayers was a deeper longing. He wasn’t just seeking what God could do for him. He was seeking God Himself.
I think that’s a question worth asking ourselves from time to time. If God answered every prayer you’re currently praying, would you still pursue His presence tomorrow? Would you still open your Bible simply to hear His voice? Would you still spend time in prayer if there was nothing left on your prayer list?
Those questions aren’t meant to produce guilt. They’re meant to reveal what our hearts truly desire.
One of the greatest gifts worship gives us is the opportunity to enjoy God for who He is, not simply for what He provides. It reminds us that Christianity is not merely a list of requests and answers. It is a relationship.
As we spend time in God’s presence, something begins to shift. We discover that the peace we were searching for is found in Him. The comfort we need is found in Him. The strength we’re looking for is found in Him. Even before circumstances change, His presence becomes enough.
That’s why worship matters so much. It draws us beyond God’s gifts and into God’s heart. And when we find ourselves in His presence, we often realize that He was what we were looking for all along.
