Come, Holy Spirit

Key Scripture

John 14:16–17

He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.

Devotional

As we begin a new month, our prayer is simple but weighty: Come, Holy Spirit. Those words are not an invitation for the Holy Spirit to become present as though He were absent from the life of the believer. Jesus promised that the Father would give us another Helper who would be with us forever. The Holy Spirit is not a passing feeling, a church atmosphere, or an emotional moment. He is God present with us, living in us, teaching us, comforting us, convicting us, strengthening us, and helping us become more like Jesus.

Many of us know how to talk about God the Father and Jesus the Son, but our relationship with the Holy Spirit can feel less personal. We may know that He exists without actually learning to walk with Him. Yet Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit as Someone we would know. He said, “You know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” That means Christianity was never meant to be lived through willpower alone. God has given us His Spirit so that His presence is not simply around us but within us.

As we begin our three-day fast today, resist the temptation to make the fast about proving how disciplined you can be. Let it become a clearing away. Hunger has a way of revealing how quickly we reach for comfort, distraction, and control. Every time your body reminds you that you are fasting, allow it to become a reminder to turn your attention toward God. Instead of only saying, “Lord, speak to me,” also pray, “Lord, teach me to recognize the Spirit who is already with me.”

This month is not about chasing spiritual experiences. It is about becoming more aware of the Holy Spirit in ordinary life. He is present when you are praying, parenting, working, driving, making decisions, serving, and sitting quietly before God. Our prayer is that by the end of this month, we will not simply know more about the Holy Spirit. We will become women who know His presence, recognize His voice, trust His power, and follow His leading.

Sister, begin this month without pressure to manufacture anything. Simply make yourself available. The Holy Spirit is not asking you to perform for Him; He is inviting you to walk with Him.

Heart Check

When you think about the Holy Spirit, do you think of Him as Someone you personally know and walk with, or mainly as a biblical concept?

Practice Today

  1. During the fast today, pause three times and simply pray, “Holy Spirit, make me aware of Your presence.”
  2. Read John 14:16–17 slowly and notice every promise Jesus makes about the Holy Spirit.
  3. Write down what you hope God will teach you about the Holy Spirit this month.

Prayer

Father, thank You for giving me Your Spirit. Holy Spirit, make me more aware of Your presence and teach me to know You beyond information. Quiet the distractions in me during this fast and draw my heart closer to You. I surrender this month to Your teaching, Your correction, Your comfort, and Your leading. In Jesus’ name, amen.
