Devotional
Learning to hear the Holy Spirit does not mean accepting every thought, impression, dream, or strong feeling as a message from God. Scripture tells us to test the spirits. Discernment is not unbelief; it is wisdom. God is not threatened when we compare what we sense with His Word.
A reliable test begins with Scripture. Does this leading contradict a clear biblical command? If so, it is not the Holy Spirit. Next, consider the character of Jesus. Does it produce humility, truth, love, purity, courage, and obedience—or does it feed pride, revenge, fear, or self-exaltation? Wise counsel also matters, especially for significant decisions.
Emotions can be real without being reliable guides. A decision can feel peaceful because it is easier, or uncomfortable because it requires courage. That is why discernment cannot depend on feelings alone. The Spirit works through Scripture, prayer, wisdom, conviction, counsel, circumstances, and a surrendered heart.
You do not need to fear discernment. God is a good Father. Stay close to His Word, remain humble, and resist the pressure to make every impression more certain than it is.
Discernment protects intimacy with God. Test what you sense, stay humble, and trust that truth will never be threatened by careful examination.

Practice Today
- Use Scripture to evaluate one decision or impression you are carrying.
- Ask a mature believer for counsel if the decision is significant.
- Avoid saying “God told me” when you are still discerning; leave room for humility.
Prayer
Father, give me discernment. Holy Spirit, protect me from deception, emotional impulsiveness, and pride. Teach me to test what I hear by Your Word and to walk humbly in wisdom. Amen.
