Key Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:22 (NIV)
To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
Devotional
When we think about worship, obedience is not always the first thing that comes to mind.
Yet throughout Scripture, obedience is one of the purest expressions of worship.
King Saul learned this lesson the hard way. God had given him specific instructions, but Saul chose partial obedience instead. He attempted to justify his actions by claiming that his sacrifices would honor God.
God’s response was clear.
Obedience mattered more than sacrifice.
Why?
Because obedience reveals trust.
It demonstrates that we believe God knows what is best even when His instructions challenge our preferences.
Sometimes obedience looks dramatic, like Abraham leaving his homeland or Noah building an ark.
More often, however, obedience looks ordinary.
Forgiving someone who hurt you.
Speaking truth with kindness.
Remaining faithful when no one is watching.
Trusting God with your finances.
Choosing integrity when compromise would be easier.
These daily decisions become acts of worship because they communicate something powerful: “God, I trust You more than I trust myself.”
Obedience is not about earning God’s love. We already have His love through Christ.
Instead, obedience is a response to His love.
When we understand how good, faithful, and trustworthy God is, we begin to desire alignment with His will.
Worship is not only what happens during a song.
Sometimes worship looks like saying “yes” to God when it would be easier to say “no.”
Every act of obedience becomes a declaration that God is worthy of our trust.
