Make Room to Be Present

Key Scripture

Luke 10:41–42 (KJV)

Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful.

Devotional

Have you ever been in the room with your family while your mind was somewhere else entirely? You were answering a message, thinking about tomorrow, or trying to finish one more thing while someone wanted your attention.

Martha welcomed Jesus into her home, but the preparations left her distracted and troubled. Mary sat at His feet and listened. Jesus tenderly addressed Martha’s anxiety and affirmed the importance of receiving His words.

Serving matters, yet we can become so consumed with doing things for people that we stop listening to them. We can even serve God while overlooking the invitation to sit with Him and allow His truth to settle our hearts.

Sister, presence requires a choice. Sometimes we need to put the phone down, leave a task unfinished for a little while, and give our attention to the person before us. Listening can become a meaningful expression of love.

Consider where distraction has been taking something precious from you. Ask God to help you recognize when it is time to work and when it is time to stop working long enough to receive, listen, and connect.

Heart Check

Who or what has been receiving only my divided attention?

Practice Today

  1. Put your phone away during one conversation today.
  2. Spend ten quiet minutes listening as you read Scripture.
  3. Give someone you love your attention without multitasking.

Prayer

Jesus, quiet the distractions that keep pulling my heart away. Help me recognize Your invitation to listen and the people who need my presence. Teach me to serve with love while making room for connection and time with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
