He Is a Person, Not a Force

Key Scripture

John 16:13

When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

Devotional

The Holy Spirit is sometimes spoken about as though He were spiritual energy—something we need more of when we want power, peace, or direction. But Scripture describes Him personally. He speaks, teaches, guides, reminds, comforts, can be grieved, and gives gifts according to His will. Jesus said, “When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” Notice the language: He guides. He hears. He speaks. He reveals. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force for us to use; He is the Spirit of God with whom we are invited to live in relationship.

That changes the way we pray. Instead of only asking the Holy Spirit to give us something, we begin asking Him to shape us. Instead of treating His power like a resource we access when life becomes difficult, we learn to walk with Him when life is ordinary. Relationship requires attention. We cannot become sensitive to someone we continually ignore. The more familiar we become with the truth of Scripture and the character of God, the more readily we recognize the Spirit’s work in our hearts.

On Day 2 of our fast, some of the initial excitement may wear off and the inconvenience may become louder. That is often where God begins exposing what competes for our attention. We are used to answering every craving quickly—food, entertainment, conversation, scrolling, noise. Fasting creates a deliberate interruption. It gives us an opportunity to tell our flesh, “You do not lead me. God does.” That posture is closely connected to life in the Spirit.

Today, do not strain to manufacture a message from God. Instead, become present with Him. Read the Word. Sit quietly. Worship. Ask the Spirit to guide you into truth. If He brings conviction, receive it. If He brings a Scripture to mind, examine it. If He leads you to pray for someone, pray. Relationship grows through faithful attention to the small moments.

Relationship grows through attention. The more room you make for the Holy Spirit in ordinary moments, the more familiar His work will become in your life.

Heart Check

Have you been relating to the Holy Spirit mainly for what He can give you, or are you growing in relationship with Him?

Practice Today

  1. Spend ten quiet minutes with no phone, music, or multitasking and simply sit before God.
  2. Read John 16:13 and list the actions Jesus says the Spirit performs.
  3. During the fast, respond to one small prompting toward prayer, repentance, encouragement, or obedience.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, forgive me for the times I have treated Your presence casually or only sought You when I needed something. Teach me to walk with You as the Spirit of truth. Guide me, correct me, and shape my heart. Make me sensitive to Your work today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
